Akihabara started as a black-market radio district after WWII and never lost its DIY spirit. Today, it's one of the few neighborhoods in the world dedicated to its own subculture — and it's a genuinely fun place to walk.

What to do in Akihabara

1. Mandarake Complex (まんだらけ)

Eight floors of secondhand manga, anime cells, vintage figures, doujinshi and rare collectibles. A museum disguised as a store. Don't miss the basement.

2. Super Potato (スーパーポテト)

The retro game pilgrimage — Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, even Virtual Boy. Working cabinets on the top floor. Bring cash.

3. Yodobashi Camera Akiba

Nine floors of electronics, plus a top-floor restaurant zone. Even if you don't buy, it's a glimpse of how Japan really shops.

4. Animate & Gamers

Big chains stocking the latest anime/manga merchandise — perfect for fresh-release goods, tickets and event-only items.

5. Gachapon Kaikan (ガチャポン会館)

Hundreds of capsule-toy machines in one room. Bring a pile of 100/300/500 yen coins. Best souvenir-per-yen in Tokyo.

6. Maid cafés

Touristy, but iconic. @home café and Maidreamin offer English menus and a one-drink-minimum starter set. Treat it like dinner theater.

Local tip

Walk Chuo-dori on Sunday afternoon — the main street becomes pedestrian-only ("hokousha tengoku" 歩行者天国). Cosplayers, street performers, and cleaner photos.
